Artist Statement

“The work explores the vestiges of time where memory fragments, information erodes, and displacement shapes experience. Hayes combines analogue and digital processes to create layered, semi-abstract imagery that blends field notes, journeys, and imagined spaces into a hybrid body of work. Multiple plates build upon textures that conceal and reveal, tracing hidden figurative forms across micro and macro scales. These fractured geographies reflect diasporic memory and map out a search for re connection to place.”

These layered compositions form abstract geo-cartographies — visual mappings of movement, memory, and terrain. Drawn from ‘notes on a journey’, the series translates drawings and photographs into multi layered prints that chart both physical and emotional landscapes.

“What I set out to capture, with tools of digital means, is in direct impulse and sensory response to experiences through light and shadow over juxtaposed forms. Elements extracted from digital stills and moving images are generated into analogue compositions on paper.

“Creating imagery in a response to a new environment, or a place I came to be in, was a very natural process of decoding the strange unfamiliar beauty around me, to find my sense of connection and well-being. Depicting this visual language and cyclical story telling comes together in original hand made printed artefacts “.
